『See What Can Be Done』『Bark』 Lorrie Moore(Audible

I love everything written by Lorrie Moore, she is a beacon to me. Her collection of essays and reviews covering other author’s work titled See What Can Be Done was recently published and it provides a great overview of her extensive talent.
Her short stories always astound me. They are darkly funny with a warm beating heart - in each and every one of them. I am addicted to audio books and there is nothing more soothing for me then being read to. Especially when the reading is done by Lorrie Moore herself, as is the case in Bark, Collected Stories (available at Audible.com)

『Fresh Complaint』Jeffrey Eugenides (Audible

Speaking of narration (since hearing seems to be –at least for the moment- the new seeing), I actually love the reading skills of Ari Fliakos so much that I have listened to audiobooks solely because of his narration. I recently stumbled upon my favorite voice again by accident when I listened to Jeffrey Eugenides wonderful short story collection, Fresh Complaint.
While we are so used to looking at our devices for all kinds of information, films, news and even the crossword, I most enjoy the gentleness of being able to listen with my eyes closed.

『Fresh India』Meera Sodha

Another thing that helps me through having to spend my time at home is cooking. It seems apt that just before we were told by our government to stay home, one of my best friends had sent me a cookbook by Meera Sodha titled Fresh India. I think I have made my way through at least half the book already. It’s a vegetarian cookbook and a lot of recipes incorporate beans, paneer and turmeric. The smell of spices is comforting when they slowly fill our apartment. Another perk of cooking these recipes is that you can marvel at how beautiful black eyed peas are while you soak them.

As for visuals, I like to turn to children’s picture books. All books by Annemarie van Haeringen (many of them are translated to Japanese) are a feast to see and read and can inspire to draw and paint your own stories, which is what I often do with my two daughters. How to Knit a Monster (‘Sneeuwwitje breit een monster’ in Dutch) has been read here numerous times. She has also made children’s books about Henri Matisse and the fashion designer and artist Coco Chanel.

『Animals That Saw Me』Ed Panar

『Animals That Saw Me』Ed Panar (The Ice Plant )は、都会の風景のあちこちで見つけた動物たちが自分を見つめている光景を撮影した写真集。

The two small photo books ‘Animals That Saw Me’ by Ed Panar (The Ice Plant ) remind me of the many media images of animals that are seen now again in urban landscapes. . I often look at these two brilliant books. Now, more then ever it seems that we can be consoled by the presence of animals. The title is funny and revealing. Animals see us and we somehow depend on them seeing us as well.
